Curtis Hughes

The music of Curtis K. Hughes (b. 1974) is characterized by its rhythmic restlessness, its harmonic adventurousness and its often volatile mix of diverse stylistic elements and political subtexts. It has been described as "fiery" in the New York Times, "well crafted" in the Phoenix, and "colorfully scored" in the Boston Globe. A professor of composition at the Boston Conservatory from 2008-2020, Curtis was a student of composers Lee Hyla and Evan Ziporyn, and is a graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory, and of the New England Conservatory (NEC), which honored him in 2010 with its Oustanding Alumni Award. 

Curtis's most recent endeavors have included new works for Hinge Quartet, RAHA Duo, Tony Arnold & Jacob Greenberg, New Gallery Concert Series, Transient Canvas and Guerilla Opera, who also premiered Say it Ain't So, Joe, his 2009 opera about the 2008 Vice Presidential Debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden (now available on Cauchemar Records).

Curtis's music has been performed across the US and internationally, from Los Angeles to Berlin, from Vermont's Yellow Barn to Bulgaria's Here/Now New Music Festival. He was a 2005 fellow at Tanglewood, and has served as composer-in-residence for Collage New Music and the Radius Ensemble. Recordings of his music for the Albany, GM, New Focus, and Cauchemar labels are available at all major online music retailers.

Olivia Katz

Olivia Katz is a radiant, engaging, and dynamic cellist, improviser, teacher, and composer with a passionate interest in contemporary classical music. Olivia strives to create an interactive, inventive, and accessible environment in which the audience is encouraged to experience classical music, art, and beauty through a new lens. In addition to musicians and composers, Olivia collaborates with playwrights, singers, painters, actors, sculptors, and poets in multiple contexts and is dedicated to bringing artists’ visions to life. Currently in Boston, Olivia privately teaches many cello students in the greater-Boston area, regularly performs and records around the city and along the East Coast, composes [mostly] text and graphic-based open-instrumentation pieces for various groups and individuals around the U.S., is on the administrative board of New Music Mosaic, and is the administrative assistant for the Boston-based contemporary ensemble Hinge Quartet. Olivia is in three ensembles around the East Coast: Moon Unit–an eccentric multi-instrumentalist trio that specializes in free improvisation; pomo—an ethereal cello, voice, and electronics trio based in New York City; and Semiosis Quartet–a Boston-based string quartet dedicated to presenting a captivating and diverse contemporary classical repertoire.

“With most of my compositions, I like to make it a true collaboration between me and the performers. In this case, the performers have agency regarding the text, the titles, the order of movements, and the pairings between the text and the scores. I am better now, out of my head acts as a blueprint for the performers to take creative liberties, make conscious decisions, and truly make it their own. Every iteration of this piece will have vastly different content and material; in each performance, it will be a unique collaboration between the performers and myself.”

Stefanie Lubkowski

Stefanie Lubkowski’s initial compositional efforts involved developing unusual timbres on her mother’s Wurlitzer organ and experimenting with sound collages in her high school electronic music studio. These early explorations nurtured Stefanie’s interest in creating sound worlds guided by harmony and punctuated by melody. Her main sources of inspiration are literature and the natural world. She went on to study Music and Technology and Guitar Performance at Connecticut College in New London, CT, and received her masters in composition from New England Conservatory where her primary teachers were Lee Hyla and Pozzi Escot.

Stefanie has written for orchestra, voice, various chamber ensembles, and electronic media. She has been commissioned by Auros Group for New Music, New Gallery Concert Series, The Fourth Wall Ensemble, Transient Canvas, Charles River Wind Ensemble, NakedEye Ensemble, Peridot Duo, smol ensemble, RAHA Duo, and soprano Elisabeth Halliday-Quan Her first opera, The Plague Bearer, premiered as a film produced by Strange Trace in November, 2022. Stefanie received her doctorate in composition from Boston University in 2014, where her teachers included Ketty Nez and Sam Headrick. She then taught composition and theory as visiting faculty at Brown University during the 2014-2015 academic year and at Concord Academy from 2018-2023. Stefanie is the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Music Composition Finalist Grant for 2015. She currently serves as the Grants Manager at ZUMIX in East Boston.

Lee Hyla

Lee (Leon Joseph) Hyla was an award-winning American composer from Niagara Falls, New York. He was born there August 31, 1952, and grew up in Greencastle, Indiana. After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music (B. Mus., 1975), he studied at SUNY – Stony Brook (M.A, 1978), and then lived in New York City for over ten years. In 1992 he returned to Boston to teach at the New England Conservatory, where he eventually became co-chairman of the composition department. In September, 2007 he assumed the Harry N. and Ruth F. Wyatt Chair of Music Composition at Northwestern University. He passed away at the age of 61 on June 6, 2014 in Chicago.

The music of Lee Hyla sought to find a common ground between the tradition of postwar American Expressionism represented by composers such as Stephan Wolpe and Elliott Carter and the gritty urban style of avant-garde Jazz musicians like Cecil Taylor. Hyla also integrated aspects of the rougher styles of Rock (especially Punk) and free jazz into the unique mix of his music. Despite its high energy and raw surface, the music is fully notated, with nothing improvised, nor is there anything haphazard about Hyla’s sense of pitch, or dramatic structure, both of which are meticulous in a way that allows raucousness to achieve elegance.

Among Hyla’s works, the 1984 Pre-Pulse Suspended for chamber orchestra marks the first thorough integration of all the elements of his musical technique. In this pivotal work, the motivic treatment of short-breathed riffs has a Beethovenian intensity and variety of phrase structure. The rhythmic force of this surface allows Hyla to juxtapose musics in contrasting tempos and affect, in an original and personal extension of methods derived from Carter. At the same time, a powerful sense of drama extends over each movement through the adroit manipulation of pedal points, which are presented either as non-transposing chords or as extended repeated notes.
Hyla continued to develop these techniques in the Concerto for Piano and Chamber Orchestra No. 2 (1991), the stunning and justly celebrated Howl (1993), written for the Kronos Quartet and Allen Ginsberg’s recitation of his famous poem, and most ambitiously in the 1996 Trans, for chamber orchestra.

Hyla’s chamber music also exemplifies his unique and engaging approach to composition, which was both complex and immediately compelling, substantial yet visceral, almost elemental in character – always rich in content and eminently direct in expression.

He was known to be an inspirational pedagogue as well as an incisive and expressive composer, and is sorely missed by students, colleagues, and friends alike.

Lee Hyla wrote for numerous well-known performers including Tim Smith, Tim Berne, Rhonda Rider, Stephen Drury, Mia Chung, Judith Gordon, Laura Frautschi, Midori, Vadim Repin and Mary Nessinger, as well as celebrated ensembles such as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Kronos Quartet (with Allen Ginsberg), Speculum Musicae, Lydian String Quartet, Boston Musica Viva, Firebird Ensemble, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He received commissions from the Koussevitsky, Fromm, Barlow and Naumburg Foundations, Mary Flagler Charitable Trust, Concert Artist’s Guild, and was the recipient of two Meet the Composer/Reader’s Consortium Commissions. He was also the recipient of the Stoeger Prize from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the Goddard Lieberson Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Rome Prize. His music is available on the Nonesuch, New World, Avant, CRI, Tzadik and BMOP Sound labels.
