A fierce advocate for new music, she enjoys collaborating with other artists on a wide variety of projects, ranging from one-on-one work with composers that culminate to world premiers of their solo works, to partaking in interdisciplinary projects involving improvisation and electronics. She is the newest member of the Semiosis Quartet, a group committed to championing contemporary music with the passion it deserves. She also regularly composes duos and structured improvisations with Dániel Matei for violin, percussion and live electronics, which so far they have performed throughout New York and Budapest, Hungary. Madeline has received recognition as both a chamber musician and soloist, having had the honor of soloing with the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra, the Vancouver Philharmonic, and the Comox Music Centre orchestra, and being the recipient of numerous chamber music awards at competitions throughout Canada. She has performed at venues including Lincoln Centre, National Sawdust, Chan Centre, MassMOCA, the Canadian National Arts Center, the San Francisco Center for New Music, and numerous music festivals across North America. Madeline holds a Master of Music degree in contemporary violin from Manhattan School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Electronics and technology have become an increasingly prominent element in her work, stemming from a passion to enhance a concerts’ capacity for audience interaction in novel ways . Recent examples have included performing a work at the IRCAM computer music forum, and co-hosting an ongoing series of interactive concerts with violist Trevor New, wherein audience members attending both virtually and in-person can directly affect elements of the musical performance in real time. Madeline enjoys engaging with other musical genres as well; she has appeared on albums with jazz saxophonists Phil Dwyer and Cory Weeds, performed interdisciplinary concerts with Canadian bluegrass band ‘The Rakish Angles,’ and is a former member of the Celtic/trad band ‘Ceilish’ which performed at the Olympic Games Torch Relay in 2010. Aside from her performance career, Madeline is also highly passionate about teaching and is currently a piano, voice, and violin instructor at Bungalow Music School in Brooklyn, New York. When not teaching, performing, or composing, she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, reading, or volunteering in her community. supporter of contemporary and new music, seeking to combine her classical training with improvisation. She is a founder of the new music ensemble Alinéa, formed at the New England Conservatory. She has premiered thirty new chamber works in the past few years, including Arturo O’Farril’s Tiny Little Walls, and the U.S. premiere of Sciarrino’s Quaderno di Strada. She also recorded with artist Heather Maloney on her album, Soil in the Sky. Emma is a frequent performer with the Phoenix Chamber Orchestra, Fermata Chamber Soloists, the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Coda Ensemble. Emma got her degree from the New England Conservatory, and is an active freelancer/teacher in both Boston and Seattle. Because of her intense performance education, she learned a lot about balance and how to use music as a positive force. She cares about fostering a healthy and beautiful relationship with music through teaching young musicians the importance of self confidence, understanding and navigating emotions, and using the body in a relaxed and natural way. Most recently, she has been appointed a teacher at New England Conservatory’s Preparatory Suzuki Program and the University of Hartford’s Hartt Community Division. Emma is currently Assistant Director of the Ithaca Suzuki Institute, as well as former director of the Massachusetts Suzuki Festival. She also teaches through From the Staff, providing lessons to students in need.
